Tata celebrates women in science, engineering and technology

September 25, 2018

Tata Africa once again participated in the South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA), previously known as the Women in Science Awards (WiSA). The awards were hosted by the Department of Science and Technology, on August 23, 2018 at the Ranch Hotel, Polokwane, South Africa.

Themed ‘100 years of Mama Albertina Sisulu: Women united in moving South Africa forward’, the awards paid homage to women in the field of Science and Technology in honour of late struggle stalwart Mama Albertina Sisulu.

Addressing the event, the Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, said, “It is fitting that this year’s SAWiSA is dedicated to remembering the sacrifices that women such as Mama Albertina Sisulu made to building a democratic society that respects and celebrates the crucial role that women play in all fields of human endeavour.”

Over the years, Tata Africa has made its contribution to the awards by presenting deserving postgraduate female students in the category of Science, Engineering and Technology with scholarships valued at R60,000. As a company which advocates for empowerment and heightening the role of women in Science, it was an absolute delight to increase the scholarship value by R15,000 per award (from R60,000 to R75,000) to six recipients of the scholarships.

Through this scholarship, Tata Africa desires to see more visibility of women in the Science, Engineering and Technology fields and serve a greater purpose of closing the gender gap in the industry.
