Contributing to Turkey earthquake relief operations

May 04, 2023

In February, six earthquakes and subsequent aftershocks in Turkey tragically impacted 10 adjacent cities (Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Malatya, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Sanliurfa, Adiyaman, Hatay, Osmaniye and Adana). The death toll continues to climb over the 50,000 mark. About 230,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed across 11 provinces in Turkey. On top of all that, unfortunately, the earthquake-hit regions of Turkey suffered flash flooding, leaving at least 20 people dead.

In view of the tragedy and urgency, Tata Steel Ticaret Board and Tata International made a contribution of Euro 10,000 each to help those affected.

The Tata Steel Turkey Office (Turkey Office) assisted with organising help packages. The team closely monitored the priorities for the kind of materials urgently needed at the region.

It was determined that the priority was for durable food products, cleaning / hygiene materials and protective clothing. Therefore Tata International’s donation was used for these products.

The Turkey office acquired these products, packaged, and delivered them to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) closely collaboration with the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) who sent and distributed the products to those affected.

The aid packs that were sourced and delivered included food and supplies.
