Leather team conducts foot measurement survey

March 14, 2022

The government of India has embarked upon a project to develop an Indian National Footwear Sizing System. This is because India does not have its own Footwear Sizing System and we have been adapting the UK Foot Sizing Standards for our population. Any footwear adapted from other Sizing Systems cannot produce comfortable footwear for our own population owing to differences in Foot Characteristics between India and other countries. It is, therefore, necessary to develop our own “INDIAN NATIONAL FOOTWEAR SIZING SYSTEM.” To achieve this, it is necessary to conduct an Anthropometric Foot Measurement Survey across India to capture the Foot Dimensions and then Statistically arrive at the Footwear Sizing System.

In this direction, the DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India has nominated CSIR-CLRI to lead this project of developing an ‘Indian National Footwear Sizing System’ along with leading Institutes from across the country as its Synergy Partners.

The technique to be used for capturing the Foot Data comprises a 3D Foot Scanner which would digitally capture the Foot Images of people across the country and automatically derive the various foot dimensions for storage into a database for later statistical analysis. To help in the efficient data capture and analysis, the country is divided into different zones and further subdivided into age and gender groups.

The team carried a 3D foot scanner, laptop, UPS, and necessary peripherals to carry out the survey smoothly.
