TIL MD Mr NN Tata calls on Madhya Pradesh CM

April 24, 2015

Tata International Managing Director, Mr NN Tata, paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mr Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in Bhopal on April 9, 2015. Mr Tata also met with Home Minister Mr Babu Lal Gaur, and State Commerce and Industry Minister Ms Yashodhara Raje Scindia. Discussions were largely focused on the company’s operations in leather and leather products at Dewas, its skills development, and generation of employment. The delegation from Tata International (TIL) included Ms Janaki Chaudhry, Head – Strategy and Business Development; Mr N Mohan, Global Head – Leather Products; and Mr Rakesh Agarwal, Head – Fashion Leather. Dr CS Katju from TIL Dewas was also present.

The leather and leather products industry is among the top 10 foreign exchange earners for the country and is core to the ‘Make in India’ initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Overall, the industry generates over 2.5 million jobs in India, providing livelihood to a large number of people from economically and socially weaker sections. Around 60 per cent of these jobs employ women, predominantly from underprivileged sections of society.

TIL set up operations in Dewas in 1972, a hamlet at the time. Subsequently, the company developed its own infrastructure to build what is now a world-class leather facility, housing India’s largest tannery. Dewas is a hub for TIL’s performance leather, fashion leather and leather garments businesses, and the town is now on the world map for leather and leather footwear.

The state is a major industrial partner and TIL will continue to strengthen its close association with the state government to advance the growth of its industry as well as protect and enhance livelihood of the people of Madhya Pradesh.
