August 27, 2014

Blankets, school shoes, food gardens, cake and herb garden – Tata companies in South Africa celebrated Nelson Mandela Day on July 18 in fine style, contributing to the communities in which they work as they joined in the worldwide commemoration of Mandela’s contribution to society.

In the Taung Township in the North West Province in South Africa, Tata Automobile Corporation SA (TACSA) staff donated shoes to 67 destitute school children at a Mandela Day ceremony attended by local dignitaries. Supported by the Tata Motors dealership in Vryburg, they identified children whose parents could not afford school shoes and donated the footwear as their way of making a difference to the lives of others. Among the dignitaries attending event at the school were senior provincial government officials, municipal managers from Taung and leaders of the Greater Taung Taxi Association.

In Soweto, the Tata Africa Holdings team spent the day revitalising the Vukani Early Learning Centre in Diepkloof. The whole building exterior was painted by the staff. To make the playground safer, jungle gyms and other playing equipment were repaired.
